Fudan University, located in Shanghai, is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and a vice ministerial level institution directly under the central government. The predecessor of the school was Fudan Public School founded in 1905, which is one of the earliest privately established higher education institutions in China. After the departmental adjustment in 1952, the school became a comprehensive university mainly focused on teaching and research in arts and sciences. Shanghai Medical University, formerly known as the Medical College of the Fourth National Sun Yat sen University founded in 1927, is the first national medical college independently founded by the Chinese. In 2000, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University to form the new Fudan University.
